Yr 9/10 Curriculum

At Nathalia Secondary College we believe that Year 9 and 10 are unique years as students move towards becoming more independent and making life choices. By the end of Year 10 students will have the skills and confidence to determine if they want to pursue VCE, VCAL, VET or a school based apprenticeship or traineeship.

To assist development, our students complete a mix of core and elective units. This program is supported by an innovative student engagement program.

Students complete semester long units in the following core units:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Physical Education
  • A semester each of: Science and Humanities
  • Year 9 - Advance (within this many students choose to complete their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh)
  • Year 10 - A semester each of: Health and Human Relations and Careers

In 2015 our College introduced a Yr 9-10 intensive program. As part of this program students select one of four intensive subjects which run for a 4 period block every week for a semester. These programs continue today.

The rest of the week the students are able to pursue areas of special interest through elective subject choices, which combine Year 9 and 10 students. Elective subjects are drawn from the Key Learning Areas of:

  • The Arts
  • Humanities
  • Outdoor Education
  • Science
  • Technology

Students are required to have a balance of areas of study within their choice of elective units. This ensures a breadth of education and the greatest range of choice for subjects at years 11 and 12.

Our Year 9 and 10 program is supported by an engagement program.

For Year 10 students this includes:

  • Two weeks of work experience
  • One week of an alternative program that focuses on making choices, study habits and time management that support students preparing for their senior school years
  • One week camp to Melbourne

Our Year 9 program is supported by:

  • One week Outdoor Education camp held at Rubicon Camp
  • One week 'Hands on Week' where students complete Certificate 2 in First Aid, complete an Art Connect trip to Melbourne, complete community service and participate in a Drug and Alcohol forum
  • One week of focused study in Shepparton looking at manufacturing, retail or tourism
  • One week completing outdoor activities and preparing for Year 10
